Baby names, their meanings and histories

Names with a story to tell. Explore a meaning, follow a history, or find a spelling that feels right. Keep the names you want to come back to in your Shortlist.

Researched from sources, checked in a separate review, with uncertainty stated plainly.

A name’s language of use and its derivation tell different parts of its story. Choose either or both.

Ibrahim to Isla.

  1. Ibrahim

    Boy

The Abraham connection. Ibrahim is an Arabic form of Abraham, written إبراهيم.

A traditional interpretation. Abraham’s Hebrew name is traditionally read as “father of a multitude,” though its exact derivation is uncertain.

This explains the Hebrew name Abraham; it is not a translation of Ibrahim from Arabic.

  2. Isla

    Girl

Isla and the island of Islay. Isla has a Scottish place-name connection with Islay. It also appears among girls’ names in Scotland’s 2023 birth registrations.

This is a dated example from 2023; Isla is used outside Scotland too.

A place connection, with an uncertain meaning. What Islay’s own name first meant is unknown, so “island” is not a settled translation of Isla.

Proposals exist for the island name, but its deeper linguistic origin is not securely established.
